The Maltese Islands

Malta, Gozo and  Comino; Manoel Island which is bridged to Gzira, and four other uninhabited Islets, Cominotto, Filfla, St. Paul and Fungus Rock (also called General’s Rock). Situated in the middle of the Mediterranean, 60 miles South of Sicily, and 179 miles from the North African coast (Tunisia). Alexandria lies to the East, while Gibraltar to the West.

 

Settlers

The first Neolithic people to settle in Malta came from Sicily around 5200 - 4000 BC. Then, the islands were greener with flowing waters and wild animals roamed the land.

Phoenician Rule 800-480BC, Greek Influence 700-600BC, Roman Rule 218BC.

Phoenicians 1000BC, Greeks 700-600BC, Carthaginians 480-218, Romans 218BC.

 

Rulers in Malta-AD:

Arab Rule 870-1090, Norman Rule 1091-1194, Swabian Rule 1194-1266, Angevin Rule 1266-1283, Aragonese Rule 1283-1412, Aragonese and Castillian Rule 1214-1530.

Arabs 870AD, Normans (Count Roger of Hauteville 1090). Roger II son of Count Roger 1091.

 

Knights of St. John 1530-1797

Knights of Jerusalem 1530 (GM Philippe Villiers de l'lsle-Adam and later Jean Parisot de la Valette).

 

French Occupation 1798-1800

France (Napoleon 1798).

 

British Period 1800-1964

England ruled Malta from 1803 King George III to 1964 Queen Elizabeth II.

House of Hanover – KGIII 1760-1820, KGIV 1820-1830, KWIV 1830-1837, QV 1837-1901.

House of Saxon – Coburg & Gotha -  KEVII 1901-1910.

House of Windsor -  KGV 1910-1936, KEVIII Jan-Dec 1936, KGVI 1936-1952, QEII 1952-1964).

They all left their mark in Malta.

 

Independence 1964-1974 

Malta became self-reliance in 1964 (Independence).

 

Republic of Malta 1975-2004

Malta became Republic in 1975.

 

E.U.M.S. 2004-

In 2004 Malta became a European Union Member State.

 

National name:

Republic of Malta, with a President and Prime Minister. Colours: White and Red with the George Cross Award. Area: 122 sq miles. Population 398,534 approx.

The Maltese Islands fall within the following co-ordinates: Northern Latitude 36o00'00" Eastern Longitude 14o36'00"

 

Facts:

Capital: Valletta.

Monetary unit: Euro Currency January 1, 2008.

Official Languages: Maltese and English. Italian, French and German are also spoken. Religion: Roman Catholic 98%

Literacy rate: 93%.

Malta is also a Member of Commonwealth of Nations.

I started collecting stamps at the age of around ten and still collect today. Since I am Maltese, my first priority is Malta Stamps. All of my stamps are in Mint, FDC'S and other special covers. First Day Covers in Malta started with King George V Silver Jubilee that was issued 6th. May 1935. My Malta collection consists of all philatelic material issued by the Malta GPO (General Post Office).

The Human Resourses Department of MaltaPost p.l.c. wins two prestigious awards

MaltaPost p.l.c. acquired two prestigious awards for ‘Excellence in Training & Development’ and‘Excellent HR Initiative’. With the achievement of these two awards, the effort of MaltaPost p.l.c.in giving training and its Human Resources Department were measured and compared to international standards. The awards were presented at a ceremony during the eighth Foundation for Human Resources Development (FHRD) awards night.

 

During the past year MaltaPost p.l.c. invested substantially in the training of its staff, both on job related subjects and on other topics for personal development. An intensive program was introduced through which Human Resources officials met with all members of staff, discussed and accepted suggestions on how to improve the place of work and the services that we offer. MaltaPost p.l.c. believes that its staff is a very valuable asset and it endeavours to invest in its future. “We are very satisfied that we succeeded in achieving these esteemed awards. This will further motivate us in our daily work with our staff”. With the excellent level of training that we are delivering and the HR’s initiative to give a voice to its staff, MaltaPost p.l.c. is sure to increase its level of quality and efficiency in the services offered to the public. Temporary Suspension of Letterbox Service

Service from the letterbox which is situated in Misraħ Dorell, Santa Lucija has been temporarily suspended due to maintenance works.

The co-operation of the public in using other letterboxes is greatly appreciated. MaltaPost apologises for this inconvenience.

The public is advised that the nearest letterbox is LB No. 013 and situated at: Civic Centre, Dawret it-Torri, Santa Lucija

Parcel and Courier Extended Opening Hours

01/12/2009

To further enhance our service during the peak Christmas period, MaltaPost p.l.c. will be extending, with immediate effect the opening hours of the Head Office Branch situated at 305, Triq Hal-Qormi, Marsa. Clients will be able to pick up their notified non-dutiable parcels, bulky packets and EMS items until 21.00 hrs Mondays to Saturdays.

Postal Services and Custom Clearance service at MaltaPost p.l.c. Head Office will be available between 08.00 hrs to 12.45 hrs and from 13.45 hrs until 19.00 hrs, Monday to Friday and from 08.00 hrs to 12.45 hrs on Saturdays. MaltaPost may also clear items from customs on the
customer’s behalf at a nominal fee upon receiving authorisation from clients.

Our country wide delivery service is being extended until 21.00 hrs Mondays to Sundays to ensure the best quality of service possible.

This extended service will remain effective until the 23rd December 2009.

Occasion Folder no 1

On the 2nd December 2009 the Philatelic Bureau of MaltaPost p.l.c. is issuing its first Occasion Folder for the 20th Anniversary since the Bush and Gorbachev summit in Malta. This folder includes the Bush and Gorbachev 1989 stamp and a personalised stamp commemorating the occasion. The personalised stamp portrays the two leaders during the 1989 summit. This occasion folder which retails at €5.00 will be available from all MaltaPost branches in Malta and Gozo, the MaltaPost mobile Unit and the Philatelic Bureau (tel. 25961747, email philately@maltapost.com, postal address: 305, Triq Ħal-Qormi, Marsa, MTP1001). Christmas - Stamp Issue

This year's Christmas set will be issued by MaltaPost's Philatelic Bureau on Monday 30th November 2009. The set depicts images of three nativity paintings from the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta and from a private collection. The stamps were designed in-house by MaltaPost p.l.c. and have values of Euro 0.19, Euro 0.37, Euro 0.63. The stamps are 44.0mm x 31.0mm of size with a perforation of 13.9 x 14.0 (comb). The stamps are printed on a Maltese Crosses watermarked paper by Printex Limited and are available in sheets of 10.

The Euro 0.19 stamp reproduces the painting in the manner of Alessandro Botticelli 'Mater Admirablis'. The Euro 0.37 stamp reproduces the painting 'Madonna and Child' by Corrado Giacquinto. The Euro 0.63 stamp reproduces the painting 'The Madonna and Child' by a follower of Simone Cantarini.

Together with the stamps, this year MaltaPost p.l.c. is issuing a Christmas card bearing the image of the painting Mater Admirabilis to complement this set. The Christmas issue and the Christmas Card will be available from all MaltaPost branches in Malta and Gozo, the MaltaPost mobile Unit and the Philatelic Bureau (tel. 25961747, email philately@maltapost.com, postal address: 305, Triq Ħal-Qormi, Marsa, MTP1001).
